Christian grew up on the farm ‘Der Langenhof’. After his father Johann Heinrich Schulte Laggenbeck, called Langemeyer, passed away, his mother ran the farm together with Christian and his sister Henriette. The idea was that Christian would eventually inherit the farm. In 1828, Christian got engaged to Carolina Brenninkmeyer. Carolina was the sister of Clemens and August Brenninkmeyer, who founded the fashion company C&A. Eventually, it turned out that the heir was Johann Heinrich, a son from the first marriage. This was a huge disappointment for Christian and Carolina. Christian had worked on the farm for 10 years with only food and clothing as his wages. For this reason, Carolina did not want to continue with Christian. However, the bride’s father, an honest and lawful Westphalian, said to his daughter: ‘If you wanted to marry Langemeyer with a farm, you will now also marry him without a farm.’
During the inheritance dispute, Christian received some land near the Langenhof and, in addition to farming, ran a small public house for the “zum Schwarzen Ross” (“Black Horse”). He had become a “Neubauer” and was now called “Kuhlmann”.

Fire in the Black Horse
The public house (“Wirtschaft am Bruch”) was leased to B. Feldmeyer on March 14, 1868. B. Feldmeyer later surrendered to the drink and one day the property burned down. The furniture was torn out during the extinguishing work, and one was amazed that it was empty. Feldmeyer was arrested and now confessed that he had put a candle on the hayloft and lit it, then went away to be able to prove his alibi. By the time the candle burned down the hay had started to burn, of course, and in a short time the whole property had been on fire. One must remember that the economy was isolated in the heath on a sandy road with very little traffic. By order of the government, the economy had to be rebuilt, but the property was then sold to Dependener.
